QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in Education Administration and an Administrative Certification at the secondary level is preferred.

JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Director-Alternative Education
SUMMARY: The Director of Alternative Education is charged with supporting the district’s alternative education programs by creating, promoting and improving the efficient operation and integrity of a variety of alternative programs in order to serve a broad range of the district’s highest-risk students.
REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent of Student Services/Building Principal
EXAMPLE (S) of WORK PERFORMED:
- Coordinates with appropriate district staff and parents the placement of students into alternative educational programs.
- Ensures that alternative programs operate within the policies and regulations of the district.
- Assists principals, counselors, and teachers of both alternative and traditional sites in developing effective classroom management skills.
- Collaborates with school staff in gathering and utilizing data on a case by case basis, and assists in planning strategies for modifying inappropriate student behavior.
- Identifies and integrates appropriate community social services into the alternative setting.
- Supervises and evaluates the instructional program.
- Conducts discipline hearings and determines services best suited to meet students’ needs.
- Coordinates implementation of discipline hearing outcomes with district staff, outside agencies, and families to meet students’ needs.
- Assists in the preparation of teacher schedules, student schedules, extracurricular activities, etc.
- Supervises student discipline/conduct.
- Supervises the reporting and monitoring of student attendance, and works with parents, counselors, social workers and other resources to address attendance concerns.
- Administers school operational policies and procedures.
- Assists and supervises substitute staff.
- Administers safety, security and emergency policies and procedures.
- Helps plan, implement, and monitor staff development and growth activities.
- Serves with parent, faculty, and student groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
- Communicates with parents.
- Pursues professional growth and development through staff development opportunities, postgraduate education, membership and participation in professional organizations and attendance at regional, state and national meetings.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (*)

- Regular attendance is required to provide support to students and staff.
- Requires travel to work sites within a building.
- Meets with students and parents outside the instructional day.
- Reviews and interprets test results and printed reports to obtain information necessary for decision-making, planning and management.
- Prepares and maintains written reports.
- Develops information for written reports and correspondence to officials inside and outside the district.
- Communicates student assignments and behavior problems in writing with others.
- Discusses individual student circumstances with teachers, principals, and parents.
- Conducts individual or group meetings.
- Provides oversight and evaluative supervision of assigned staff.
- Communicates with employees and parents via telephone.
- Communicates student assignments and behavior problems verbally with others.
- Observes and evaluates employee performance.
Physical Demands (Strength)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Vocational Preparation: (Experience)
Minimum 3 years successful teaching experience at the secondary level
3 years successful building administration experience in an alternative educational setting preferred
Education Preparation: (Formal and Informal)
Master’s Degree in Education Administration preferred
Missouri teaching and administrative certification at the secondary level preferred
